Rain continues in Karnataka, CM Basavaraj Bommai to visit worst-hit districts

BENGALURU: With heavy rain over the past two weeks leaving a trail of destruction in many parts of Karnataka, CM Basavaraj Bommai will visit the worst-affected areas in Kodagu, Dakshina Kannada, Udupi and Uttara Kannada districts on Tuesday and Wednesday to take stock of the situation. IMD says rain is expected to batter the state for the next 24 hours and it has issued orange alert for five districts.

Farms flooded as KRS water released

The meteorological department has issued orange alert for five districts - Dakshina Kannada, Uttara Kannada, Shivamogga, Chikkamagaluru and Udupi. A yellow alert has been sounded for Kodagu, Haveri, Belagavi, Dharwad and Hassan as heavy rain is likely in the next four days.

"The past 10 days have seen heavy rain in coastal and Malnad districts. I've spoken to deputy commissioners to take measures to help those in distress. With rain abating, I'll be leaving on a tour to assess the damage brought by rain and landslides," the CM said.

Bommai will go to Kodagu and Dakshina Kannada on the first day, and visit Udupi and Uttara Kannada the next day. Kodagu district has reported 12 incidents of landslide and 50 houses damaged in heavy rain. The coastal districts are facing the threat of being cut off from the mainland which would affect the supply of essential items.

As many as four National Disaster Response Force teams have been deployed in Kodagu, Dakshina Kannada, Belagavi and Raichur; a fifth team is on standby in Bengaluru. State disaster response teams have been sent to Belagavi, Uttara Kannada, Udupi and Dakshina Kannada, where flood threats are looming large.

With the Cauvery river crossing the danger mark, more than 70,000 cusecs of water is being released from KRS reservoir in Mandya district. Farms on riverbanks are inundated and barricades have been set up to prevent people from going near the overflowing river.

The water level in Almatti reservoir built across Krishna river in Vijayapura district in North Karnataka has reached 516m, as against the maximum level of 519m.

Though Bengaluru has been receiving rain, life has remained normal.
