Rain and strong winds bring early morning travel disruption

There was disruption to public transport and roads as rainy and blustery weather battered the region.

Early morning services on Merseyrail were affected by debris being blown on to the line and power supply problems.

The New Brighton line experienced disruption after a "large trampoline" was blown onto the tracks.

It led to the 5.53am New Brighton to Liverpool Central service being cancelled while it was removed.

The same line also reported power supply problems, which have also been resolved.

On the roads, there was a fallen tree towards the railway bridge by Allerton Road and Queens Drive.

Safety warnings were issued for coastal areas, including Merseryside, as strong winds were forecast.

The Met Office issued a yellow weather warning for wind across England and Wales from Wednesday evening which it says could lead to some short-term loss of power and delays to transport.

Liverpool's weather forecast shows that at 6am on Thursday, winds of 58mph were expected to hit the city.

The warning issued by the Met Office in place between 9pm on Wednesday until 3pm on Thursday, said: "Strong winds accompanied by heavy and blustery showers may bring some disruption to England and Wales."

The later forecast is for the rain and squally winds to clear eastwards, leaving spells of sunshine but with a scattering of showers.

Locally heavy and thundery showers were forecast for this afternoon, with strong westerly winds.
