Rain and possible thundery showers expected as weather remains grim this weekend

More rain could be on the way to the North East this weekend as the weather forecast remains grim.

There will hopefully be some long clear and dry spells, but the heatwave is well and truly over as the Met Office has predicted possible thundery showers for Sunday.

It's been a less than glorious summer this year with lots of heavy rain and now we're heading into autumn with cooler temperatures making an appearance.

The Met Office told us what to expect this weekend:

Saturday

"Breezy and increasingly cloudy this morning, after some early brightness, with outbreaks of rain spreading east.

"This afternoon the rain quickly clears, sunny spells develop but also a few showers, these mainly across the Pennines.

"Feeling cooler than yesterday. Maximum temperature 19 °C."

Saturday evening

"The isolated showers may continue across the Pennines, but generally everywhere will be dry with long clear spells and the wind becoming light

"Feeling cooler than recent nights. Minimum temperature 9 °C."

Sunday

"Breezy, feeling cooler, with sunshine and scattered sometimes heavy and perhaps thundery showers.

"However, many areas will start dry and sunny before the cloud and showers build. Maximum temperature 16 °C."
