Railway track can be seen suspended in the air in video showing scale of floods which shut line

Footage showing the dramatic flooding which closed a major rail route in Wales has been released.

Rail services connecting the north of England and south Wales were disrupted for a week after several sections of the  track, ballast and embankment were eroded or washed away .

Now, Network Rail has released a video which reveals the extent of the flooding which meant there were no trains running between Hereford and  Newport  until Saturday, November 2, when the line reopened.

The line needed repairing at six different locations north of Abergavenny , with engineers replacing 500 tonnes of ballast and 300 tonnes of track foundations that were washed away.

The work delivered to reopen the line included the removal and replacement of 100 metres of track over five areas together with transporting to site and laying 600 tonnes of ballast stones.

Network Rail has thanked passengers for their patience after a bus replacement service ran between Abergavenny and Hereford for a week.

Bill Kelly, Network Rail’s route director for Wales and Borders, said: “I would like to thank passengers and all those affected by the closure of the line.

"The severity of the rain and flooding had a devastating impact locally so we put in place immediate plans to reopen the railway as quickly as possible.

“I would also like to thank our team who worked around the clock in very challenging weather conditions to reopen this important line ahead of schedule.

"I am also grateful to our partners at Transport for Wales for keeping passengers moving while rail services were disrupted.”

Colin Lea, customer experience director for Transport for Wales Rail Services, thanked all teams involved for their hard work and dedication, and also thanked customers for their patience over the last few days.
