Railway lines blocked between Newcastle and Morpeth after person killed by train at Cramlington

Trains have come to a halt between Newcastle and Morpeth after a person was struck by a train.

British Transport Police officers and paramedics were called to an injured person on line at Cramlington station at 3pm on Thursday.

It has been confirmed that the person was pronounced dead at the scene.

A spokesperson for the British Transport Police said: “Officers were called to Cramlington station at 3pm today following reports of a casualty on the tracks.

“Paramedics also attended however a person was sadly pronounced dead at the scene.

“Officers are now working to identify the person and inform their family.

“The incident is not being treated as suspicious and a file will be prepared for the coroner.”

Due to the emergency response, trains have been unable to run on this stretch of the track.

Affected services include LNER, CrossCountry, Northern and TransPennine Express.

A replacement bus service is now running between Newcastle and Edinburgh as disruption is expected to last until at least 6pm.

Some trains have been cancelled, including the 3.30pm LNER train from Edinburgh to London Kings Cross, and other services are subject to delays of up to an hour.

LNER passengers may also use TransPennine Express buses which will be calling at Berwick.

Tickets for LNER services are also being accepted by TransPennine Express and Avanti West Coast trains during the closure.
