Railway lines blocked after person hit by train

Railway lines are blocked tonight and services have been cancelled after a person was hit by a train.

An exact location has not been revealed, but train operators said the incident happened between Macclesfield and Stoke-on-Trent and Manchester trains were being affected.

Emergency services are believed to be at the scene and no details have been revealed as yet. The Manchester Evening News is attempting to contact British Transport Police.

Avanti West Coast said: "Alterations to services between Macclesfield and Stoke-on-Trent. Due to a person being hit by a train between Macclesfield and Stoke-On-Trent all lines are blocked.

"Train services running through these stations may be delayed by up to 30 minutes or diverted. Macclesfield will not be served. Disruption is expected until the end of the day."

Rail operator Northern added: "Due to the emergency services dealing with an incident between Macclesfield and Stoke-On-Trent all lines are blocked. Train services running through these stations will be cancelled or delayed. Disruption is expected until 10pm.

"Services between Macclesfield and Stoke on Trent are currently being disrupted due to the emergency services dealing with an incident.

"The first affected service is the 19:47 Manchester Piccadilly to Stoke on Trent which is currently at a stand. Emergency services will be on site shortly.

"Road transport has been requested to operate between Macclesfield and Stoke on Trent."

CrossCountry services are also being affected. National Rail Enquiries said all lines were currently closed and trains may be cancelled or delayed by up to 30 minutes. "Disruption is expected until the end of the day," they added. Passengers are being urged to check with train operators.
