A 24-year-old train dispatcher was detained Tuesday on suspicion of involuntary manslaughter after a passenger train hit a stationery freight train in southern Germany, killing two and injuring 14, police said.

The crash late Monday happened close to a station in the town of Aichach.

The passenger train was traveling from Augsburg to Ingolstadt. Its 37-year-old driver and a 73-year-old female passenger were killed.

Police said in a statement Tuesday that they believe human error caused the head-on collision, but didn't elaborate.

Police said the driver of the freight train was uninjured. One of the injured was in a serious condition.

In a separate incident in Bavaria, two people were killed Monday when a train hit their car at a crossing near Lake Starnberg.
