The Queen died peacefully this afternoon at Balmoral Castle after 70 years on the throne. Tributes were paid to the 96-year-old who was widely loved and respected around the world.

RMT general secretary Mick Lynch said: "RMT joins the whole nation in paying its respects to Queen Elizabeth. The planned railway strike action on September 15 and 17 is suspended. We express our deepest condolences to her family, friends and the country."

Announcing Queen Elizabeth's death, Buckingham Palace said: "The Queen died peacefully at Balmoral this afternoon. The King and The Queen Consort will remain at Balmoral this evening and will return to London tomorrow."

The Union flag above Buckingham Palace was lowered as the news was announced. Barely an hour early a brilliant double rainbow had lit up the sky in front of the palace.
