Rail passengers warned to expect severe disruption this weekend as heat wave sends temperatures off track

Rail passengers are being warned to prepare for disruption this weekend on Britain's railways as the hot weather frazzles the tracks.

Temperatures are forecast to soar up to 34 degrees this weekend, sending the steel rails soaring to a whopping 50 degrees.

Train delays are expected as services will have to travel slower mmid fears of tracks bending and buckling under the sun.

Network Rail has activated its extreme weather response taskforce in the North West and parts of central England to cope with the strain.

They warned that those travelling the West Coast main line between Crewe and London Euston could be particularly affected.

James Dean, chief operating officer for North West and Central, said:“Keeping passengers moving is always our top priority. But we want people to be prepared.

"If the soaring temperatures do lead to us having to put in place slower speeds for safety reasons, please bear with us as our dedicated teams of engineers work to fix the problem.

"It may mean your journey takes longer over some portions of your journey."

Network Rail also urged passengers across the country to carry water with them at all times to ensure they are properly hydrated.

Passengers concerned about how their journey may be impacted are told to check the Network Rail website for updates.
