Rail minister pledges planned new Blyth Bebside rail station will go ahead

The planned new Northumberland Rail Line between Newcastle and Ashington will go ahead with all six stations open from the start, rail ministers have pledged.

That includes a planned new station near Bebside, Blyth Valley, said Rail Minister Chris Heaton-Harris.

Officials working on the rail line have been told to find cost savings. And an account of a meeting involving the Department for Transport and Northumberland Council, leaked to Chronicle Live, showed that axing or delaying the Bebside station was an option discussed.

But Mr Heaton-Harris told Chronicle Live: "We will be delivering the Northumberland line with six stations, including one at Bebside, on time and on budget.

"We intend to deliver all six stations at the very start of the scheme.

"I was in the meeting.

"We have been doing these cost and delivery challenges on every project, because I am trying to get the best value for the taxpayer and make sure every penny is spent wisely.

"We are going to deliver the Northumberland line with six stations. It will be on time and on budget and all six stations will be working from the start."

He said partners such as Network Rail, the local authority and rail operators had been told they must reduce costs but this did not mean there would be any cuts to the proposed service.

Labour MP Ian Lavery had previously submitted a Freedom of Information request to Northumberland County Council asking them to reveal exactly what was discussed at the meeting, which was attended by Andrew Gilligan, Boris Johnson's transport adviser.

New stations are planned at Ashington, Bedlington, Blyth Bebside, Newsham and Seaton Delaval. Trains will connect with the Metro at Northumberland Park, in North Tyneside.

Transport Secretary Grant Shapps announced in January that the Government would provide £34 million towards re-opening the Northumberland Line between Newcastle and Ashington.

The money will pay for preparatory work, including land acquisition, detailed design work and early site works, paving the way for the line to reopen for passenger services after it was closed in the 1960s. Passenger trains are expected to start running in 2024.

It's part of a Government drive to re-open old rail lines closed during the Beeching cuts of the 1960s, as part of the "levelling up" policy.
