They have now been taken to custody, a spokesperson for the British Transport Police said.

The line is currently blocked, National Rail said, with services towards Manchester affected.

Northern, TransPennine Express and Transport for Wales services may be subject to cancellations or delays.

The disruption is expected to end by 12.30pm.

In a statement, a spokesperson for the British Transport Police said: "BTP were called to a train being held at Newton-le-Willows railway station at 11.07am today (26 October) following reports of anti-social behaviour on-board.

"Officers attended, and three men were arrested on suspicion of public order offences and common assault before being conveyed to police custody."
