Rail line and road from Bristol to Wales closed this weekend

Travel in and out of south Wales is expected to be badly disrupted this weekend as the rail line and part of the M48 Severn Bridge is closed.

Rail passengers are being warned to plan their journeys in advance as work to electrify the south Wales main line will be taking place this weekend.

Engineers will be working on Saturday and Sunday to switch on the electricity running through the overhead lines between Bristol and Cardiff.

There will be no trains to Cardiff and Newport as work continues on the electrification of the mainline.

On Saturday (September 14) trains will run between London Paddington and Bristol Parkway, then restart from Cardiff Central.

Trains will also run between Portsmouth Harbour and Bristol Parkway as well as between Taunton and Bristol Temple Meads today.

On Sunday (September 15) connecting coaches will replace trains between Bristol Parkway and Bridgend.

Trains will run between London Paddington and Bristol Parkway, then restart from Bridgend.

Trains will also run between Portsmouth Harbour and Bristol Parkway.

Rail replacement buses will be in operation between Bristol and south Wales.

However it won’t all be plain sailing on the roads either.

The westbound carriageway of the M48 Severn Bridge, from J1 Aust to J2 Chepstow, will remain closed all weekend for resurfacing works.

It will affect those travelling from England into Wales.

The closure came into force on Friday night and will remain in place until 6am on Monday morning (September 16).

Motorists have been advised to take a diversion via the M4.
