Rail disruption for Rutherglen set to start this Sunday

Rutherglen residents can expect disruption to their train services starting this Sunday, and continuing for the month of April.

Network Rail is delivering a programme of major track renewals affecting routes through Rutherglen to Glasgow Central.

The work will begin on March 31, and continue every Sunday until April 28.

Customers are being advised to expect disruption to their journeys as buses will replace trains on some services and others will be diverted between Lanarkshire and Glasgow Central and between Edinburgh and Glasgow Central, via Shotts.

The work being delivered is the renewal of 1,700 yards of track and supporting components which, which Network Rail say will improve the resilience and reliability of the railway and improve performance through this busy rail corridor.

Track renewal work at Rutherglen will see around a mile of track removed and replaced along the busy rail corridor for services towards Glasgow Central Low Level.

Lindsay Saddler, Network Rail head of maintenance for Scotland said; “There is never a good time to close the railway, however, the lower volume of services and number of people travelling on a Sunday means that this is the least disruptive time to deliver the work required.

“These projects are planned well in advance and preparatory work is now underway ahead of the delivery of work during this series of Sunday line closures.  We will do what we can to minimise disruption for both passengers and for our lineside communities during this work.

“We are sorry for any inconvenience these works may cause and would advise people travelling on Sundays from Lanarkshire to Glasgow in the coming weeks to plan their journeys in advance on each weekend through April.”

Passengers should leave extra time for travel, and plan ahead. Further information is available at  www.scotrail.co.uk  as well as on the ScotRail app.

The list of routes routes affected by the changes are:

Glasgow Central – Lanark

Glasgow Central – Newton

Glasgow Central – Edinburgh (via Shotts)

Glasgow Central – Motherwell
