Rail disruption expected until the end of the day due to 'sinkhole' and burst water main

Rush-hour rail commuters have been warned of possible delays due to a burst water main.

Routes across Greater Manchester are expected to be hit with disruption, according to reports.

The burst was reported above a railway line tunnel and engineers are said to be carrying out urgent repairs on Friday afternoon.

East Midlands Railway reported a 'sinkhole'.

Trains between Sheffield and Stockport may be cancelled, delayed or revised until the end of the day, according to reports by National Rail.

All passengers are being advised to travel to Manchester Piccadilly and change there.

A road nearby is also expected to be closed off.

It's understood water has flooded the track underneath.

TransPennine Express and East Midlands Railway are all likely to be affected.

The burst was reported above the New Mills Newton tunnel in Derbyshire earlier on Friday afternoon.

TransPennine Express services between Manchester Airport and Cleethorpes may be diverted and not call at Stockport.

It's due to a safety inspection of the track between the stations.

"Trains between Sheffield and Stockport may be cancelled, delayed or revised until the end of the day.

"Northern services are not affected by this disruption.

"Services cannot run between Sheffield and Stockport, where possible services will be diverted via Romiley and will not call at Stockport."

All commuters are being urged to check social media before travelling.
