Rail chaos for Scots passengers as trains stranded following fire alarm drama near Waverley

Several rail services across Scotland have been cancelled after a late night fire alarm sparked a mass evacuation.

Emergency services were called to the Edinburgh Signalling Centre, near Waverley station, at around 9.45pm on Wednesday.

Services were temporarily suspended while the incident was dealt with, however transport chiefs were forced to store several trains in the wrong location overnight.

As a result, at least six services have been cancelled this morning affecting commuters in Edinburgh, Glasgow, Dundee, Motherwell, Alloa and Stirling.

ScotRail said: “With last night's fire alarm activation at Edinburgh signalling centre meaning we had to store some trains away from their planned position, we've had to cancel six services this morning, and amend one other.

“This morning our 0628 Tweedbank to Glenrothes service will start from Edinburgh Waverley at 0737.

“The following services are cancelled: 0559 Motherwell to Edinburgh, 0602 Dundee to Edinburgh, 0657 Stirling to Glasgow Queen Street, 0713 Alloa to Glasgow Queen Street, 0751 Edinburgh to Tweedbank, 0859 Tweedbank to Edinburgh.”

Network Rail said that freight services have also been affected with teams working throughout the night to restore order.

They tweeted: “Following the fire alarm activation at our Edinburgh Signalling Centre last night, we've been working through the night with passenger and freight operators to try and deliver the normal timetable this morning.

“The signalling centre is now fully operational, though there will be some disruption to this morning's services.
“This is due to trains being out of position, with some being stored at different locations than usual last night.

“We're grateful for your understanding and patience, particularly if you were caught up in last night's disruption.

“We'll be investigating the cause of the problem and our teams are focused on delivering a good service this morning.

“If you're travelling on Scotland's Railway this morning, check with your train operator for any changes before you leave the house.”
