Raiders WR Henry Ruggs III to be charged with DUI resulting in death

As first reported by TMZ, and subsequently confirmed by multiple sources, Las Vegas Raiders receiver Henry Ruggs III was involved in an automobile accident early Tuesday morning that resulted in a fatality. The Las Vegas Police Department released the following statement:

On November 2, at approximately 3:39 a.m., the LVMPD responded to a traffic collision near the intersection of South Rainbow Boulevard and South Spring Valley Parkway, involving a Chevrolet Corvette and a Toyota Rav4. Responding officers located the Toyota on fire. Fire department personnel responded and located a deceased victim inside the Toyota. The preliminary investigation indicated the front of the Chevrolet collided with the rear of the Toyota.

The driver of the Chevrolet, identified as 22-year-old Henry Ruggs III, remained in scene and showed signs of impairment. He was transported to UMB Hospital to be treated for non-life threatening injuries. Ruggs will be charged with DUI resulting in death. This is an on-going investigation.

Per the Nevada State Legislature, the penalty for DUI causing substantial bodily harm or death (NRS 484C.430) is a minimum of two and a maximum of 20 years in prison with no probation or suspended sentence, a mandatory fine of $2,000-$5,000, and a three-year license suspension.

NRS 484C.430 states that this is the “penalty if death or substantial bodily harm results; exception; segregation of offender; plea bargaining restricted; suspension of sentence and probation prohibited; affirmative defense; exception; aggravating factor.”
