Raiders WR Bryan Edwards impressed in first day of padded practice

It seems like every day, we hear positive news about third-round pick Bryan Edwards. And it all started in the offseason when he impressed teammates during private workouts and the glowing reviews haven’t stopped.

After falling to the third round in the NFL Draft due to a foot injury, things have gone exceptionally well for the former South Carolina star. Not only has he impressed coaches and teammates on the field, but he’s shown to be a quick learner, as well.

But the most impressive thing about Edwards is just how tough and physical of a receiver he can be. According to quarterback Derek Carr, Edwards looked “violent” on Monday. While he doesn’t possess elite speed, Edwards knows how to use his body and size to box out smaller defenders. That is a trait the Raiders have missed since Michael Crabtree last played with the team.

In the team’s first padded practice on Monday, Edwards drew the praise of beat writer Vic Tafur of The Athletic, saying the following in his practice recap article:

“Fellow rookie Bryan Edwards also continues to impress, making every kind of catch and showing he has hands and underrated speed to go with his size.”

Edwards’ role as a rookie remains to be seen, but the constant drumbeat of positive news out of camp is encouraging, nonetheless. Look for Edwards to work his way onto the field this season, likely as a backup “X” receiver. But if he continues to produce and impress like this throughout camp, it’s certainly possible he could fight for a starting role sooner rather than later.
