In recent months there have been discussions surrounding the possibility of NFL rosters being reduced from its current 90 players in order to better handle the COVID-19 protocols. The NFL spoke to players via conference call today and, according to multiple reports, informed them that rosters will be set at 80 players as camp begins.
This means that between now and the first day of camp on July 28, the Raiders — along with the rest of the league — will be cutting at least ten players from their current roster.
When this discussion first surfaced last month, it immediately became clear the undrafted players were going to suffer for it.
Currently, the team has eight undrafted rookies. They are clearly the most vulnerable to being cut even before they have had a chance to prove their worth.
But they won’t be the only ones cut. They also have 11 first-year players. Most of the ten players who are cut will come from those 19 players. And perhaps a surprise cut or two as well. You hate to see this happen, but such is the nature of the situation the NFL is in right now.
