Raiders trade CB Conley to Texans in exchange for pick

The Raiders are trading former first-round pick Gareon Conley to the Texans, a team source confirmed Monday afternoon.

In exchange, Oakland will receive a third-round pick in the 2020 draft, giving them three selections in that round.

Conley has played in all six games this season, including Sunday's loss in Green Bay. He was carted off the field during the Raiders' opener against Denver after a collision with teammate Johnathan Abram, but he returned to play in Week 2 against Kansas City.

The third-year cornerback started 14 games last season for the Raiders, and all six so far in 2019.

Conley, as well as the rest of the Raiders secondary, had a rough go of it in Sunday's 42-24 loss to the Green Bay Packers, as Aaron Rodgers passed for 429 yards and five touchdowns.

In the third year of a contract signed as a rookie, Conley was due $1.892 million in salary in 2020 and the Raiders would have needed to determine after this season whether to extend a fifth-year option.

Conley's departure means the Raiders have just two players remaining from their nine member draft class in 2017 _ linebacker Marquel Lee, a fifth-round pick who is currently on injured reserve, and tackle David Sharpe, a fourth-round pick out of Florida who started and played every snap in Sunday's 42-24 road loss to the Green Bay Packers.

Sharpe was waived at the final cutdown in 2018 and spent time with the Texans on their practice squad and 53-man roster before being claimed by the Raiders last Nov. 2.

Conley came to the Raiders out of Ohio State as the No. 24 pick in the 2017 draft. The pick was controversial as Conley was accused of rape just days before the draft, but in July of 2017, a grand jury ruled against charging him.

The Raiders have not said who will take over Conley's place among the defensive starters. Presumably Trayvon Mullen, Keisean Nixon or Nevin Lawson will move into the starting lineup.

The move was necessitated for the Texans by an injury to cornerback Phillip Gaines during Sunday's loss to the Colts.
