Raiders TE Jared Cook will test free agent market says GM Mike Mayock

As free agency approaches, it appears that one of the best players on the Raiders’ roster will hit the open market. Speaking at his Wednesday press conference, general manager Mike Mayock said Oakland wants Pro Bowl tight end, Jared Cook, to return in 2019, but acknowledged that he will become an unrestricted free agent and will test the market.

Cook was brilliant in 2018, setting career highs in receptions (68), receiving yards (896) and touchdowns (6). Considering how weak the free agent market is for tight ends, it wouldn’t be surprising to see him get a monster extension. However, it does appear that Oakland would like to see him back and will likely match any offer.

If the Raiders can’t retain Cook in free agency, the 2019 NFL Draft is loaded with talent, especially at the end of the first round. Expect players such as Noah Fant and Irv Smith to get some consideration from Oakland in the first round if Cook signs elsewhere in free agency.
