Raiders still waiting on breakout game from rookie DE Clelin Ferrell

After spending the No. 4 pick on Clelin Ferrell, the Raiders are still waiting on a breakout performance from the former Clemson defensive end. In six starts, Ferrell has totaled just 11 tackles, two quarterback hits, and one sack.

To make matters worse, he is struggling in both the run and pass game, grading as one of the worst defensive ends in football, according to Pro Football Focus. Take a look at what the site thinks about the rookie defensive end midway through the 2019 season:

Ferrell is still waiting for his big break in a Raiders uniform, as he ended yet another game with a grade below 60.0. He managed only two quarterback hurries from 27 pass-rush snaps and missed one of his three tackle attempts in Week 8 against the Texans. He now ranks 116th among 117 qualifying edge defenders in overall grade and last among all rookie edge defenders in pass-rush win rate.

While it’s too early to call Ferrell a bust or anything close to that, it is time to be concerned. He is being out-played by fourth-round pick Maxx Crosby and is in danger of losing playing time if he doesn’t improve. No one on the Raiders’ roster needs to have a bigger second half of the season than Ferrell.
