Raiders snag three defenders in Mel Kiper’s second mock draft

With the Oakland Raiders having three first-round picks, there has been much debate about how the team should use those selections. The prevailing thought is that the Raiders should spend all three of their first-round picks addressing their porous defense.

In Mel Kiper Jr’s latest mock draft at ESPN, the Raiders did just that. Take a look at the three defenders the Raiders selected, via Kiper:

4. Oakland Raiders
Rashan Gary, DE, Michigan

24. Oakland Raiders (from CHI)
Byron Murphy, CB, Washington

27. Oakland Raiders (from DAL)
Brian Burns, OLB, Florida State

Rashan Gary isn’t a fan favorite as most believe there will be better players available to the Raiders. However, it’s hard to deny his athleticism and potential. Once he performs at the NFL Scouting Combine next week, his stock should skyrocket.

With the No. 24 selection, the Raiders picked cornerback Byron Murphy, arguably the best corner in the draft. Oakland desperately needs another cornerback to pair with Gareon Conley and Murphy would be the perfect match to cover No. 2 receivers. If the Raiders can grab Murphy at the bottom of the first round, that would be a home run pick.

Finally, the Raiders drafted defensive end Brian Burns from Florida State. Burns is a wiry edge rusher who needs to add strength in the NFL. However, he knows how to get to the passer. At pick No. 27, this is an outstanding value. Despite the selection of Gary, this would be an ideal mock draft for the Raiders.
