Raiders sign safety DJ Swearinger and edge rusher Dion Jordan, send Karl Joseph to injured reserve

On the final defensive play of Thursday night’s game, Karl Joseph intercepted Philip Rivers to seal the win. He came down and had his ankle rolled up on by Chargers’ receiver Keenan Allen. That injury has ended his 2019 season.

To replace Joseph’s spot on the roster, the Raiders have signed journeyman safety DJ Swearinger.

A former second round pick (57 overall) by the Houston Texans in the 2013 draft, Swearinger has bounced around in his seven NFL seasons

The 5-foot-10, 205-pound safety spent two seasons with the Texans and has since made stops with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers (2015), Arizona Cardinals (2015-16, 2019) and Washington Redskins (2017-18). Over his seven-year career, he has appeared in 94 contests and made 70 starts, compiling 383 tackles (292), 4.5 sacks, 14 interceptions, 40 passes defended, nine forced fumbles and four fumble recoveries.

Swearinger started four games for the Cardinals earlier this season putting up 28 tackles (17 solo) and one pass defended. Swearinger’s 11 interceptions since 2016 are tied for second-most among NFL safeties.

In addition to Swearinger, the Raiders added former third overall pick edge rusher Dion Jordan. Raiders fans may remember him as the guy the Dolphins selected after trading up with the Raiders who took DJ Hayden at 12 overall.

Jordan spent two years with Miami and appeared in 26 games, making one start. Jordan spent the past two seasons with the Seattle Seahawks. Over his career, the 6-6, 275-pound defensive end has appeared in 43 games with four starts, recording 77 tackles (58 solo), 8.5 sacks, four passes defended and two forced fumbles.

In corresponding move the Raiders waived LB Quentin Poling who they had called up from the practice squad this week.
