Raiders cornerback Sean Smith is facing issues more serious than his hold on a starting position.
Smith, 30, faces two felony charges as the Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office alleges he "beat and then stomped" the head of his sister's boyfriend in a July 4 incident in Old Town Pasadena on the corner of Arroyo Parkway and Colorado Boulevard in the early morning hours.
A warrant for Smith's arrest was filed Wednesday and his first court date is scheduled for Sept. 29 and the maximum prison sentence is seven years.
According to the statement, the incident "inflicted great bodily injury upon the victim." He was charged with felony assault and battery with serious bodily injury."
Smith, according to USA Today, was in a Pasadena jail Thursday night with bail set at $80,000.
Smith, who signed a four-year, $40 million contract last season, has struggled through training camp and was temporarily demoted to the second team. Smith was back working with the first team Wednesday.
The Raiders completed training camp Thursday and will host the Los Angeles Rams Saturday at the Coliseum and Smith's status is unclear.
The NFL allows paid leave for players facing serious charges that have yet to go through the court system.
Raiders officials could not be reached for comment.
