Each week, it’s becoming more and more evident that the Raiders hit a home run with the No. 24 pick in the 2019 class. Through five weeks, running back Josh Jacobs has tallied 507 total yards and has scored four touchdowns as he has been the team’s workhorse back.
His play and his production isn’t going unnoticed as he is still Pro Football Focus’ highest-rated rookie through five weeks. Take a look at what the site had to say about the former Alabama runner:
Oakland running back Josh Jacobs faced the toughest challenge of his rookie campaign against the Chicago Bears in Week 5. Jacobs came away rather successful with a 77.7 overall grade. On top of that, Gruden decided to use more of Jacobs in the receiving game, with three targets on 17 receiving routes ran where he would pick up 20 yards and a broken tackle. Overall on the season, Jacobs has found the most success rushing right up the gut. On attempts at or between his guards, Jacobs is the highest-graded running back by a mile. If Jacobs can broaden his great play to the receiving game, he can set himself apart from others at his rather replaceable position.
With Oakland having a competitive roster, there are going to be even more big games coming for Jacobs and the Raiders. The return of Gabe Jackson should help as well, and if Oakland can figure out their wide receiver corps, that could keep defenses honest.
Look for Jacobs to continue to produce at an elite level over the next 11 weeks as he makes his case to be a Pro Bowl running back in his first NFL season.
