OAKLAND, Calif. _ Raiders quarterback Derek Carr suffered a transverse process fracture in his lower back when he was hit late in the third quarter of Oakland's 16-10 loss to the Denver Broncos Sunday, and could miss from 2-6 weeks.
Coach Jack Del Rio said he received the bad news on Carr just 10 minutes before he met the media Monday afternoon. He said Carr had an X-ray and an MRI during the morning, but neither turned up anything conclusive, but a subsequent CAT scan revealed the fracture.
Del Rio said Carr is not incapacitated but wouldn't speculate on when he might be able to return to practice, let alone games. The coach said he spoke to Carr by phone shortly after receiving the diagnosis.
Backup EJ Manuel will assume Carr's starting duties. Manuel took over for Carr and performed well but threw a late interception that allowed the Broncos to hold on to the victory.
