Raiders QB Derek Carr on revolving WR corps: ‘I love the challenge’

The Raiders will be undermanned at wide receiver again Sunday against the Packers, but for quarterback Derek Carr, it’s just another day at the office.

In fact, Carr embraces the added difficulty in conducting Oakland’s offense. With No. 1 WR Tyrell Williams suffering from plantar fasciitis in addition to the season-long revolving door at the position, Carr’s positive attitude is welcome.

According to The Athletic’s Vic Tafur, Carr would still rather continuity at WR, as he’s enjoyed for brief periods of his career. But he’s not one to back down from a challenge.

“I think the most stability I had was when we had Seth (Roberts), Amari (Cooper) and (Michael Crabtree), what was it two years?” Carr said. “That was pretty fun. But it is what it is, man. At the end of the day, no one cares in this league. You have to go out and perform and win football games, and that’s No. 1. To be honest with you, it’s kind of exciting. I love the challenge.”

Carr’s performance backs his bravado. He’s completed passes to 13 different skill players this year with a completion rate of 73.3 percent, best in the NFL.

Against Green Bay, the Raiders will likely start wide receivers Trevor Davis, Keelan Doss, and Hunter Renfrow, with Marcell Ateman possibly earning playing time and new acquisition Zay Jones being a wild card, per Tafur. Only Renfrow has appeared in all five games for Oakland.

Carr can complete passes to tight ends and running backs as well, and he’ll look to do that Sunday as the Raiders attempt to maintain balance on offense on the way to another victory. The Raiders beat the Bears in London with a skeleton crew at WR, so Carr is clearly up for the challenge.
