Raiders’ Maxx Crosby Reveals Why He Headbutted Patrick Mahomes

Maxx Crosby is no stranger to Patrick Mahomes and the NFL MVP’s ability to deliver miraculous throws downfield while dodging pesky defenders.

When the Raiders and Chiefs clash in AFC West showdowns twice a year, there is no shortage of fiery competition between the two stars. That was surely the case when the two teams faced off in a Monday Night Football game in October.

Crosby created a stir when he butted heads with the Chiefs’ star during the contest. In a recent episode of VonCast with Von Miller, Crosby recounted that the moment stemmed from him landing a sack against Mahomes, which ignited a competitive fire in the quarterback.

“[Mahomes] was talking back like …’Aye, what’s up?’ And so, they went down and scored,” Crosby said. “And I’m standing and watching, and they were all running in the end zone. I get bumped behind my back. I get hit with a shoulder. I turned my shoulder, and it was Pat, and he was still running.

“I’m like, ‘Oh no, I’m not going for that,’ and so I ran straight to him and I headbutted him, like ‘What’s up?’”

The Chiefs wound up overcoming a 17-point first-half deficit to defeat the Raiders, 30-29.

Crosby told Miller that most people are unaware of how competitive Mahomes is in contrast to other players—and quarterbacks specifically.

“When I’m out there, he’s talking s— right back at me. … Most quarterbacks aren’t like that,” Crosby said. “They are silent. They’re not going to say much.”

Crosby and Mahomes will go head to head when the Raiders play the Chiefs on Nov. 26 in Las Vegas and Dec. 25 in Kansas City.
