Raiders lose 21-13 to Chiefs to snap winning streak

KANSAS CITY, Mo. _ The Raiders finally dug themselves a hole so deep that they couldn't recover.

On a chilly sub-freezing night at Arrowhead Stadium, the Raiders saw their six-game winning streak end in a 21-13 loss to the Kansas City Chiefs.

The Raiders (10-3) now find themselves tied for first in the AFC West with Kansas City (10-3), which has the upper hand in the divisional race on the strength of its season sweep.

While the Raiders' AFC West title hopes aren't sunk, they'll now need some help to guarantee themselves a home playoff game assuming they still go on to make the postseason.

With temperatures in the teens and wind whipping, the Raiders offense looked nothing like it's normally explosive self. Derek Carr completed just 17 of 41 passes for 117 yards.

The Raiders trailed 21-3 in the second quarter, but gave themselves a chance when they forced two turnovers to start the second quarter and the defense pitched a shutout after halftime.

But on a night the Raiders dropped tons of passes and Carr consistently threw off target, it was a fourth-down pass to Seth Roberts _ who was guilty of several drops himself _ that was knocked away by Terrance Mitchell with 1:56 to play.

The Chiefs were able to pick up one first down to run out the clock and the Raiders remain winless against Kansas City in coach Jack Del Rio's tenure. It's Oakland's fifth straight loss to the Chiefs overall, with Carr now 1-5 against them.

A special teams turnover helped the Raiders get on the board first after they opened the game with a three-and-out. Marquette King's punt was muffed by Tyreek Hill and rookie James Cowser jumped in to rip the ball away for the recovery at the Chiefs' 38.

The Raiders picked up one first down afterwards, but had to settle for a Sebastian Janikowski 44-yard goal and a 3-0 lead.

Oakland kept the Chiefs scoreless in the first quarter but couldn't contain the dynamic rookie Hill on the second play of the second quarter. Cornerback David Amerson had no help over the top against the NFL's fastest player and Hill burned past Amerson and caught a 36-yard dime from Alex Smith for a touchdown.

The Raiders offense was stymied most of the first half and followed Kansas City's touchdown with a three-and-out. The Chiefs used a big third-down pass to tight end Travis Kelce to help ignite a seven-play drive Charcandrick West capped with a 3-yard touchdown run.

Another three-and-out by Oakland led to them getting burned by Hill again. King's punt was right down the middle of the field and gave the Chiefs space to set up the blocks and Hill flew past the coverage. King was the last one with a chance and he got crossed up by the speedster as he went 78 yards for the score.

The Raiders have shown that penchant for recovering when they've been kicked in the mouth and did so again. The Raiders went up-tempo with 6:17 to play in the first half and moved efficiently down the field. Latavius Murray carried five times on the 14-play drive and scored from a yard out for his 12th touchdown of the season. That made it 21-10 at halftime.

Smith was dynamite for Kansas City in the first two quarters, completing 11 of 16 passes for 202 yards. But the Raiders forced him into two uncharacteristic errors to open up the second half.

Smith's second pass of the third quarter was well off target and the Raiders' TJ Carrie picked it off and returned it to the Chiefs' 18-yard line. That didn't necessarily ignite Oakland's stagnant offense and it was left settling for a Janikowski 33-yard field goal.

The Raiders made it back-to-back plays forcing a turnover when Khalil Mack blew into the backfield past left tackle Eric Fisher to strip sack Smith _ his eighth straight game with a sack and third straight with a strip sack. Denico Autry recovered and the Raiders were in business at the 18.

That only led to more frustration though. Murray got the Raiders to the 7-yard line, but a holding penalty backed them up and they had to try another field goal. Jon Condo's snap was a little off and King couldn't secure it cleanly. He tried fruitlessly to scramble and Oakland blew a chance for points.

The teams got into a punting battle as the scored stayed 21-13 entering the fourth quarter. Murray and the running game was about the only thing work for the Raiders until suddenly they had a golden chance for a big play.

Carr scrambled up through the pocket and Amari Cooper was open deep. Carr, who was off target often on the evening, got the throw there but Cooper seemed to stumble and couldn't even get a hand on the third-down pass that may well have been a touchdown if he caught it.
