Raiders fined $50,000 for unauthorized access following Saints game

The Raiders' tab for violations related to the coronavirus is up to $300,000.

An investigation for having an unauthorized team employee in the locker room following a Week 2 home win over New Orleans has resulted in a $50,000 fine, a league source confirmed. The NFL Network was first to report the story.

Previously, the Raiders, along with the Saints, 49ers and Seattle Seahawks, were hit with a $250,000 fine for not following NFL mask protocol during the New Orleans game at Allegiant Stadium.

Those Raiders fines do not include an additional $100,000 fine incurred by Jon Gruden for not wearing his mask, which according to the NFL the coach must pay himself.

A recent fundraiser during which several Raiders players were videotaped not wearing masks in violation of NFL coronavirus protocols isn't likely to result in fines to the offending players. Although the NFL said it was "looking in" to the situation, an Aug. 3 memo to all 32 teams detailed protocols for players and left discipline, which could include fines and suspensions, to the individual teams.

Gruden defended his players for attending tight end Darren Waller's benefit for the Waller foundation, citing the $300,000 raised by the function for the prevention of drug and alcohol abuse among youths as well as the support of those afflicted.

"They may have let their dauber down a little bit by taking their masks off during the event. But it's been addressed," Gruden said.

The NFL subsequently issued a memo reminding teams reinforcing coronavirus protocols and that events like Waller's were not acceptable.

In a text message to this news organization early this week, Raiders owner Mark Davis said the locker room and Waller event situations "were isolated and not condoned nor representative of the overall actions of the majority of the Raider organization. We continue to take the virus very seriously."
