The MVP award in the NFL has turned into a quarterback award, and it’s not hard to see why. Quarterbacks have such a big role in the outcome of the game and having a difference-maker at that position is needed to make a Super Bowl run.
If the NFL were to redraft every player, quarterbacks would be the top 15 or so picks. After that, things get interesting. But EDGE rushers are starting to see their value increase and there might not be a more valuable pass rusher in the league than Maxx Crosby.
In a recent article by Seth Walder of ESPN, he ranked the top 100 most valuable players from the 2023 season. Crosby came in at No. 14, ahead of several starting quarterbacks, such as Jared Goff, Justin Herbert, and Jalen Hurts. Crosby’s superpower is simply how much he’s on the field. He doesn’t have the pass rush win rate (just 18%) of other edge rushers at the top of this list, but he’s a very good run defender, as he led the NFL in run stop win rate at edge. That’s valuable in and of itself, and it also means he rarely comes off the field.
Crosby played 95% of the Raiders’ defensive snaps, more than any other edge rusher on this list by a healthy margin. As a result, he still had the fourth-most total pass rush wins and led the league in pressures.
Crosby was snubbed when it came to being a first-team All-Pro selection, giving the nod to T.J. Watt and Myles Garrett instead. But Crosby had just as impactful as a season, leading the Raiders to the No. 9 scoring defense.
Crosby continues to improve every season and his impact is only getting bigger. He is a true franchise player in every sense of the word.
