Raiders DE Carl Nassib announces that he is gay

There was big news in the football world on Monday as defensive end Carl Nassib announced that is gay. Nassib is currently the only openly gay player in the NFL today and made the announcement via his Instagram.

During his Instagram post, Nassib also revealed that he donated $100,000 to The Trevor Project, which focuses on suicide prevention efforts among lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, and questioning youth.

Nassib signed with the Raiders during the 2020 offseason and appeared in 15 games. He totaled 2.5 sacks as a rotational defensive end who could play multiple positions. Nassib was benched for a short period of time before returning to the field for the final three games. He played a total of 463 snaps for the Raiders on defense during his first season with the team.

The Raiders restructured the contract of Nassib earlier this offseason to save some money. That move ensures that Nassib will be on the roster in 2021, but he will be facing a difficult climb for snaps with several other players ahead of him on the depth chart.

Look for Nassib to compete for the No. 4 defensive end spot on the team and for snaps on game day.
