Christian Hackenberg's fresh start lasted less than a month.
The Raiders announced Tuesday that they have cut Hackenberg, three weeks to the day after the Jets traded the former second-round pick to Oakland for a conditional seventh-round pick.
The Raiders will now keep that seventh-round pick, effectively negating the trade.
Hackenberg did not play a regular-season snap for the Jets in his two years with the team.
After drafting Sam Darnold with the No. 3 overall pick in April, general manager Mike Maccagnan finally gave up on Hackenberg, who overhauled his throwing motion this offseason with quarterback guru Jeff Christensen. Apparently those sweeping changes were not enough to impress Jon Gruden in Oakland. Hackenberg was already fourth on the Raiders' quarterback depth chart behind starter Derek Carr and backups Connor Cook and EJ Manuel.
Hours before he was traded, Hackenberg blamed the Jets coaching staff for his stunted development.
"I think there were some times where I threw it really good throughout my first two years here," Hackenberg said May 22. "So that was the frustrating part for me, is the ups and downs and not knowing why, if that makes sense, and not really getting any information from anybody on how to fix that and how do address it."
Now the 23-year-old is without a job.
