Raiders CB Gareon Conley ‘going to be OK’ after injury scare in Week 1

On Monday night, the Oakland Raiders upset the Denver Broncos to get their first win of the season. But the victory was somewhat bittersweet as cornerback Gareon Conley appeared to suffer a severe neck injury in the third quarter.

Conley was hit on the helmet by teammate Johnathan Abram’s foot as Conley and Abram slid out of bounds while trying to make a tackle on the sideline. Conley was then taken off the field on a stretcher amid a lengthy delay. However, head coach Jon Gruden said in his postgame press conference that the news appears to be very good on Conley.

While it seems unlikely that Conley will return for Week 2, the team does seem optimistic that their star cornerback will return this season. And for that, the Raiders and Conley — who was called for a personal foul for leading with his helmet on the hit — have to feel extremely fortunate.
