Raiders bring back QB Nathan Peterman on one-year extension

Today, the Raiders officially kept Nathan Peterman off the free agent market on a one-year extension. He returns for his fourth go-round with the Raiders.

Originally, the Raiders scooped Peterman up and placed him on the practice squad after the Bills cut the 2017 fifth round pick late in the 2018 season.

After spending the entirety of the 2019 season on injured reserve, he was active for most of last season as Derek Carr’s primary backup while Marcus Mariota recovered from an injury he suffered in training camp. Once Mariota was ready to return, Peterman was made inactive the rest of the season.

With regard to Mariota, the Raiders have a decision to make. He is set to make $11 million next season should they not void the second year of his deal or trade him.

Peterman’s return doesn’t necessarily mean Mariota will not return, but it is certainly possible that’s what Peterman’s return could signal. As it stands there are four quarterbacks on the roster: Carr, Mariota, Peterman, and Kyle Sloter.
