Raiders beat Packers late on shortened field in Winnipeg, 22-21

The Oakland Raiders have finished their third preseason game, beating the Packers in Winnipeg, Manitoba, 22-21. This was one of the more unusual preseason games for several reasons, including that the game was played on a shortened field due to poor turf in one end zone and zero stars appearing from either side.

Not only did the Raiders hold out their starters, but most of their rookie class also did not play in the game. Oakland exercised extreme caution in this contest, possibly due to the field conditions. However, the game was entertaining, with multiple score changes late in the fourth quarter.

Mike Glennon started the game for the Raiders, completing four of nine passes for 38 yards. He played in three drives, leading the Raiders to a field goal on the third drive of the game. Outside of that, Glennon didn’t have his best night.

Veteran Nathan Peterman played the rest of the way, completing 23 of 37 passes for 210 yards and two touchdowns. Peterman led a late touchdown drive, throwing a touchdown in the back of the end zone to De’Mornay Pierson-El. Oakland went for two to tie the game, but Peterman was picked off to keep it a two-point game.

Peterman got another shot with just under three minutes in the game and led the Raiders down to a game-winning field goal. Altogether, it was an impressive performance by the former Pittsburgh passer.

The best play of the game was arguably a reception by undrafted free agent Keelan Doss late in the fourth quarter. Doss caught a beautiful back-shoulder fade by Peterman, tapping his toes in bounds as he made the catch. Doss is making his case to be on the 53-man roster.

On defense, second-year defensive tackles Maurice Hurst and P.J. Hall dominated the Packers’ offensive line all night long. With Oakland’s defensive line banged up, Hurst and Hall were forced into action and did not disappoint. Both should have big roles for Oakland this season.

The Raiders will finish their preseason against the Seahawks next Thursday night in Seattle. They will then have to make their final cuts before 4 p.m. ET Saturday.
