Raiders among the league’s worst drafting teams in recent study

It’s no secret that the Raiders have had their fair share of struggles in the draft over recent years. The team has not had a first-round pick make it to a second-contract (with the Raiders) since Darren McFadden, who was picked in 2008. Despite having a total of five first-round picks in the last two drafts, their classes have been a bit underwhelming.

But just how bad have their drafts been compared to the rest of the NFL? Well, if you are a sucker for pain, this is a post for you.

In a recent study by Tim Riske of Pro Football Focus, he took a look at the drafting success of every team in the NFL since 2017. Not a surprise, but the Raiders finished near the bottom. Here is an example of one chart from Riske that displayed the positional value and weighing each round’s value since 2017:

This result shouldn’t be all that surprising as the Raiders have no picks remaining on their roster from the 2017 draft. In 2018, Kolton Miller is the only every-down starter and the 2019-2020 drafts are a bit hit-or-miss, as well.

The Raiders will enter the 2021 NFL Draft with just one first-round pick. They have to hit on that pick and unfortunately, the trust from the fanbase to get that right is starting to deteriorate. It’ll be fascinating to see if they can correct this sooner rather than later.
