Raid on village social club finds £350k worth of drugs

A village social club in South Wales secretly had £350,000 worth of cannabis growing, according to Wales Online.

Police carried out a raid at the Caerau Progressive Club on Monday, March 25, where they made the discovery.

The drugs, which contained more than 500 individual cannabis plants, were confiscated and destroyed.

Two men were arrested and charged in connection to the discovery: 42-year-old Geoffrey Watson of Caerau and 45-year-old Paul Joy from Peterborough.

Sergeant Beynon, who was part of the team who made the discovery confirmed the two men were in custody.

Beynon also commented on the strength of the policework involved with the case, saying: "Great to see the departments coming together to get the best results.

"There might be a strange smell in south Wales tonight after police incinerated the van loads of cannabis seized and prevented reaching our streets."

Speaking on behalf of the local police, Mark Simmonds said:

“This was a joint operation between the neighbourhood policing team and officers from the organised crime unit.

“We will continue to take robust action to tackle the supply and distribution of illicit drugs across Bridgend.”

Both Watson and Joy appeared in Cardiff Magistrates’ Court on March 27, and have been remanded in custody until their next court appearance on April 23.
