Manchester City forward Raheem Sterling has defended Joe Gomez after the Liverpool defender was booed by England fans as he came off the bench to replace Chelsea's Mason Mount.
The pair clashed in a match at club level prior to the November international break and their disagreement spilled over into the national team training camp.
England manager Gareth Southgate sent Sterling home after a confrontation that saw Gomez left with a scratch under his right eye.
Speaking after the 7-0 win over Montenegro, the national team boss lamented the reaction from fans.
"I am hugely disappointed for Joe," said Southgate. "Joe had done nothing wrong.
"No England player should ever be booed when they are wearing the shirt. All the players are particularly disappointed with that."
On Twitter, Sterling reacted to the boos with a message of support for Gomez.
"To all the England fans," tweeted the City star. "I wanted to leave things at it was but tonight I have to speak again.
"It was hard for me to see my team mate get booed for something that was my fault.
"Joe hasn’t done anything wrong and for me to see someone who keeps his head down and work hard especially after a difficult week for him to be booed when he came on tonight was wrong.
"I’ve taken full responsibility and accepted the consequence. I felt as though I had to say this get home safe every one."
