Raheem Sterling set to captain England against the Netherlands

Raheem Sterling is set to captain England when they take on the Netherlands in the Nations League on Thursday night.

The Manchester City forward will captain his country for the first time in his playing career, according to a press release released on behalf of Colossal Sports Management.

The press release states Gareth Southgate is set to hand the armband to the 24-year-old for their semi-final fixture in Portugal, something which will round off Sterling's most successful season campaign to date.

As well as winning an unprecedented treble with City this season Sterling was named the PFA Young Player of the Year, BEDSA Sportsman of the Year and named in both the PFA and Champions League Teams of the Year.

Sterling is set to earn his 50th international cap when he leads out England on Thursday night, and speaking ahead of the match his teammate Fabian Delph backed the forward to achieve at least a century of international appearances in his playing career.

“Yeah, I hope so, and there’s a lot of young guys in the squad who could go on to get 100-plus caps, not just Raheem,” said Delph.

“But from knowing him and what his mindset is like, I’m pretty sure that he’s got that in the back of his mind that he wants to go and break that record or head towards it.”
