Raheem Sterling 'set to captain England' against Holland in Nations League semi-final

Raheem Sterling is set to be named as England's captain in their Nations League semi-final with Holland, according to his PR agency.

Manchester City superstar Sterling's personal PR company, Purple PR, appeared to let the news slip in a press release, according to the Daily Mail.

Sterling is a key member of Gareth Southgate's 'leadership group' and will make his 50th appearance for the Three Lions on Thursday night.

If the claims Sterling will lead the side out are correct, that would suggest first choice captain Harry Kane and usual back-up Jordan Henderson will be rested for the clash in Portugal.

Striker Kane and midfielder Henderson were both involved in the Champions League final on Saturday - with Henderson's Liverpool beating Kane's Tottenham 2-0.

Southgate has previously talked about Sterling as a future England skipper.

“He has those qualities,” Southgate said in March.

“It’s difficult to talk about a potential captain when the captain is in the hotel waiting to go for dinner, but in terms of his personal qualities, he’s shown some outstanding personal qualities.”

“In between November and March, observing his maturity and influence, I felt that would be a good step for him.

"I think when you speak to other young players, he’s one of the first they speak about making them feel really comfortable in the environment. That was a really important move for him.”

Sterling is expected to face the media on Wednesday with Southgate but has previously admitted he wants to bring City's trophy glory to the national team.

"To lift a trophy with England, I would love that," Sterling said. "We've all got to look at that and do our best to try to win. It's as simple as that," he said.

"We need to leave that mentality behind - the whole 'see how it goes' thing. Nowadays, with our mentality, the talent we have on our team, we have to go to look to win things.

"That's the mentality and if you have that mentality from before - the 'let's see how it goes' - if you're not 100 per cent sure, there's no point."
