After the debacle against Leicester, holders Manchester City provided a reminder of their enduring class to ease into the quarter-finals.
Raheem Sterling opened his account for the season with two goals and new signing Ferran Torres claimed his first for City on his full debut as Pep Guardiola's side cruised to victory.
Following the chastening 5-2 defeat to Leicester, Guardiola could have picked a weakened side, particularly with so many absentees and a testing Premier League away to Leeds on Saturday.
But Guardiola chose a strong side and his team selection was vindicated with a comfortable win, while there was also an impressive debut from 18-year-old academy forward Cole Palmer.
Sterling may have set City on their way to victory but Palmer's mature display, a goal and assist for Torres, and the return of Ayermic Laporte and Bernardo Silva, added to Guardiola's delight.
Palmer's tenacity in midfield saw him win the ball in the move that led to City's second goal, the teenager seizing his chance after a spate of games as an unused substitute.

Torres, a £21million summer signing from Valencia, was a constant threat, setting up Sterling for his second goal and getting on the scoresheet himself with an assured finish.
City moved the ball around with their customary assurance and swagger from the start and clearly felt they had a point to prove after the Leicester debacle.
Burnley keeper Bailey Peacock-Farrell executed a fine save low down to his right in the 14 minute, after Sterling had wriggled free of his pursuers to release a low shot.

Peacock-Farrell denied Sterling again five minutes later, after De Bruyne had put him through on goal with a typically outrageous pass.
De Bruyne was at it again moments later, chipping a sumptuous ball over the Burnley defence for Torres, who was unable to get his shot on target.
Palmer got sight of the Burnley goal just before the half-hour mark, but Peacock-Farrell made it a hat-trick of stops to deny him.
But Peacock-Farrell could do nothing to stop City's opener after 35 minutes, Sterling scoring with a first-time finish after a slick move involving Laporte and Benjamin Mendy.
Sterling claimed his second four minutes after the restart. Palmer won the ball, De Bruyne took it on and found Torres, who crossed for Sterling to apply a simple finish.
Torres claimed his first City goal in the 65 minute, slotting the ball into the far corner to complete the rout and send Guardiola's side into the last eight.
