Raheem Sterling sacks PR agency after leaked England team news gaffe

Raheem Sterling has dumped the PR agency which leaked news about him getting the England captaincy.

Manchester City star Sterling admitted he was “fuming” after PR company Purple put out a story that he was getting the armband to mark his 50th cap against Holland in June.

Sterling spoke to England boss Gareth Southgate to reassure him that it was done without his permission as the story led to embarrassment within the FA.

It is now understood that Sterling and his representatives have severed all ties with Purple and are considering alternative arrangements.

Sterling is one of the most high-profile and successful Premier League stars and at the forefront of England’s revolution under Southgate.

He has also become one of the most marketable players in the world and his public stand against racism has drawn widespread acclaim.

Harry Kane will reclaim the England armband for the forthcoming Euro 2020 qualifiers with Bulgaria and Kosovo.

Meanwhile, Chris Powell has joined England manager Southgate’s coaching staff.

Former Charlton and Huddersfield boss Powell comes in as part of a Football Association programme designed to “solve the challenge of under-representation” of black, Asian and minority ethnic (BAME) coaches.

Michael Johnson, who guided Guyana to their first Gold Cup this summer, will team up with the England Under-21s.

There are only five BAME managers in English football’s top four divisions. The FA has also announced that Jason Euell, Marcus Bignot, Omer Riza and Matthew Thorpe will work with other age-group sides.

The FA have also signed a new sponsorship with catering company Deliveroo.
