Raheem Sterling has laughed off his penalty miss in Man City's Premier League Asia Trophy final defeat to Wolves as a 'tribute' to the 50th anniversary of the moon landing.
City started brightly in the game and Sterling could have had a hattrick early on as he missed several chances to break the deadlock, most of which were created by the immense Kevin De Bruyne.
Then midway through the half Leroy Sane showed off his electrifying pace and was brought down in the box by Adama Traore.
Sterling stepped up to take the spotkick and absolutely blazed it over the bar, keeping the score 0-0, which is what it finished at after the full 90 minutes as the game became dull in a stop-start second half.
The final went straight to penalties and City's bad form from the spot continued as Ilkay Gundogan and David Silva both saw their penalties saved consecutively.
Danilo and Aleix Garcia then scored theirs to make the score level at 2-2, meaning Lukas Nmecha had to score to send it sudden death, but his tame effort was easily batted away by the impressive Rui Patricio.
Though City lost the game it was a very good performance which left Pep Guardiola 'satisfied' and allowed Sterling to shrug off the penalty miss.
He Tweeted following the game: "Probably no better tribute than my penalty today for #Apollo50th. Clearly not the best I had, congrats to Wolves for the #PLAsiaTrophy tho. Thanks China for the warm welcome."
City will now travel on to Hong Kong to face local side Kitchee on Wednesday before concluding their pre-season tour of Asia against Yokohama FM in Japan on Saturday.
