Raheem Sterling reveals Man City goal target he set for himself at beginning of season

Raheem Sterling says he set himself a target at the beginning of the season to improve on his goalscoring tally from last year.

Sterling scored 18 goals and assisted 15 more in the Premier League last season - with seven further goal contributions in other competitions - as City won a league and Carabao Cup double.

This term, the England winger has become one of Pep Guardiola's first choice players, producing even better form for club and country.

And Sterling has told the Premier League that his target before the start of the season was to better his tally from 2017/18.

Explaining the reason behind his impressive form this campaign, Sterling said: "With the manager bringing more wide players in and me always wanting to be in and around the team.

Leicester City boss Brendan Rodgers' defiant message ahead of Man City clash

"I realised that was a part of my game I need to do better at [goals and assists].  It's something that I've started to enjoy and I've always said I wanted to get better at."

"Last season I said to myself 'I want to score 15 in the league' then went on to score 18 and this season I've gone back and said 'I need to do better than last season'.

"That's how it goes as a winger, if youou can contribute those sort of numbers and assists you can help your team competing for trophies at the end of the year."

With two Premier League games remaining and an FA Cup final to play, Sterling currently has 17 league goals and 12 assists, meaning he is behind his target.

But his overall figures for goals and assists matches his return from last season, and Sterling has three games left to beat his goal.

Even if he falls short, a possible domestic treble may be some consolation to a player who has quickly become one of the most prolific in the Premier League.
