Raheem Sterling posts message to Man City fans after Champions League exit

Raheem Sterling feels proud of Manchester City after they were eliminated from the Champions League in dramatic circumstances.

City exited the competition on the away goals rule despite beating Tottenham Hotspur 4-3 at the Etihad on Wednesday night.

Sterling scored twice in the win and thought he had netted his hat-trick goal in injury time to seal City's place in the last four, only for the goal to be disallowed after a VAR review.

City couldn't muster another chance after Sterling's strike was chalked off and they must now regroup ahead of Saturday's rematch with Spurs in the Premier League.

"A heartbreaking result after all the hard work we've put in to get the qualification," Sterling wrote on Instagram on Wednesday morning.

"Really hard to accept but we can still be proud of what we showed, how you guys supported us and how our hearts beat as one for this club."

Meanwhile, Bernardo Silva played down the idea that City will be looking for revenge when Tottenham return to Manchester at the weekend.

"Not time for revenge, time for another competition, time to keep us alive in the title race," he said. "We will try to win the game in the same way we did today, knowing that we are playing against a very good team. That will make it difficult for us."

Asked whether he had ever played in a game as dramatic as Wednesday night's, Bernardo responded: "I have played quite a few games.

"I have played the semi-finals of the Champions League with Monaco, the quarter-finals of the Champions League with Monaco, the quarter-finals last season with City.

"It was an intense game. It is easy to say but I think we deserved better tonight. But that's it, that's football. We have to accept it and next season we will try again."
