Raheem Sterling opens up on VAR heartbreak - and telling his two-year-old son Man City had lost

Raheem Sterling was at the heart of one of the most dramatic moments of the season as his late strike against Tottenham in the Champions League was ruled out by VAR.

The England international believed he had sent Manchester City into the Champions League semi-finals when he fired home in stoppage time in a breathless encounter at the Etihad Stadium.

Yet there was one final twist as the goal was ruled out due to Sergio Aguero being offside in the build-up - and the attacker has now opened up on his VAR heartbreak.

Sterling has compared the feeling of watching the ball hit the back of the net like scoring the winning goal in a World Cup Final.

But it was the reaction of his two-year-old son when he returned from the game which proved the toughest part of the ordeal.

Raheem Sterling reveals he was a "massive" Manchester United fan as a kid

“I remember before the game, saying: ‘this is the day. this is the day'," Sterling told Mirror Sport's John Cross in an exclusive interview .

"And in the last seconds I’m thinking I’ve scored that goal, the World Cup final goal. I celebrated like that.

"Then I remember seeing the VAR and remember thinking: ‘Yeah, I think Sergio could have been offside…’

"I remember going home that night and my son was in the car. He’s only two now but absolutely loves football.

Raheem Sterling says Liverpool rivalry is now THE game for Manchester City fans

"He was kind of sleepy, then he woke up as I was bringing him upstairs and he goes: ‘Daddy score, Daddy win.’ And I went: ‘No, Daddy scored but we didn’t win today.’ That was horrible, absolutely horrible.”

Sterling and City put their Champions League disappointment behind them to secure a second straight Premier League title.

They will now aim to complete a historic domestic treble by winning the FA Cup against Watford this weekend at Wembley.
