Raheem Sterling identifies what will give Man City a better chance of winning Champions League

Raheem Sterling believes that as long as Man City continue qualifying from their Champions League groups then 'the better chance' they will have of finally winning the competition.

Despite the fees spent on some of the world's best players over the last decade, European football's top prize has continued to elude City.

They have made the semi-final of the competition just once, back in 2016, and have suffered agonising eliminations in recent years under Pep Guardiola.

In 2017 they had a 5-3 home advantage after the first-leg against Monaco but were then eliminated after losing 3-1 in the return fixture.

The year following they were smashed 5-1 on aggregate by Premier League title rivals Liverpool and last season the cruel hand of VAR denied the Blues a last gasp winner against Tottenham and they were then eliminated on away goals.

Guardiola has recently played down the significance of winning the competition again but it remains clear that it's one City still want to conquer.

Sterling believes he knows what they need to do to have the best chance of finally doing so.

"We know the teams we have in Europe, they are top opponents," the City star said.

"It will never be easy to win it. We need to keep going. The most important things is trying to qualify from this group. If we keep doing that, year in year out, the better chance we will have to win it [the Champions League]. We just need to progress the group stages and think about it later.

"We just need to keep focus. There are more games coming up and we know they are going to be difficult. So we just need to keep going. We go to the weekend now and we need to focus on that."

City have won their opening two games of this season's Champions League, which stands them in good stead to qualify in first place.

However, they faced tricky opposition in Dinamo Zagreb on Tuesday and it wasn't until Sterling struck in the 66th minute did they finally break the Croatian resistance.

Phil Foden would go on to add a second with the last kick of the game and Sterling has revealed that the result was inevitable because of how City were playing.

“We created a lot of chances, we know that if we kept playing our football, we would create another chance," he added.

"That's what we did. We kept playing our football and, at the Etihad Stadium, if we keep that tempo, that intensity, not a lot of teams can hold. That's exactly what happened.”
