Raheem Sterling explains reason behind FA Cup semi-final ticket gesture

Raheem Sterling has revealed why he bought tickets for students of his old school in London to watch Man City's FA Cup semi-final victory against Brighton and Hove Albion.

Sterling paid for 550 tickets for pupils of Ark Elvin Academy to attend Wembley and even met some of them in Manchester in the week and answered their questions.

After the game Sterling explained his own childhood made him want to give the children an opportunity like he once had.

"Growing up in Wembley, when there were games on I was never able to step into the stadium until I got a free ticket," he told the BBC.

"I saw the Cup Final between Chelsea and Manchester United and that was a turning point in my life.

"I wanted to give them the same opportunity."

City managed to grind out a 1-0 victory against a spirited Brighton side after Gabriel Jesus scored the winner in the 4th minute.

It was a difficult game for City who were put under a lot of pressure as the game wore on but Sterling believes getting through it is a mark of the team's character.

Man City player ratings: Aymeric Laporte great and Bernardo Silva good vs Brighton

"Brighton were brilliant, they stayed in the game and caused us problems from set-pieces. We showed spirit to hold on," Sterling added.

"We have some huge games to come, we look forward to the next one at Spurs on Tuesday and focus solely on that."

City will face either Wolves or Watford in the FA Cup final on May 18.
