Raheem Sterling calls out 'idiots' as racist abuse overshadows England's victory over Bulgaria

Raheem Sterling has called out the supporters who subjected England players to racist abuse, calling them 'idiots'.

The Manchester City star, who started his career with Queens Park Rangers, was one of several stars to be on the receiving end of discriminatory chants and actions from a section of the Bulgaria supporters.

The clash was stopped twice in the opening 45 minutes after Harry Kane and then Gareth Southgate lodged a complaint with the matchday officials, while Tyrone Mings, Marcus Rashford and Sterling himself could be heard being targeted.

But while the game was one incident away from being abandoned, the England squad took the decision to carry on playing and came away with a 6-0 victory as a result.

As well as being a wonderful player on the pitch, Sterling has established himself as a figurehead in the recent movement being made to remove racism from the game, and as such he took to social media after the game to share his thoughts.

His first post was in response to an article in which the Bulgarian head coach accused England of having a bigger racism problem, to which he replied, "Mmmmh ... Not sure about this one chief."

He then posted a more detailed message which read: "Feeling sorry for Bulgaria to be represented by such idiots in their stadium.

"Anyway.. 6-0 and we go back home, at least we did our job. Safe travel to our fans, you guys did well."
